Dan Shen is the dried root of a Salvia species, commonly known as Red Sage Root or Salvia Root. It invigorates the Blood, addressing physical pain and emotional constraint caused by Blood stasis. Dan Shen is also used for traumatic injury, on its own or alongside other herbs to improve the movement of Blood.
Herb actions
Dan Shen moves the Blood and dispels Blood stasis, an important herb in women's health, easing menstrual pain, chest tightness, and rib pain tied to Liver qi and Blood stagnation. Dan Shen also clears Heat and eases irritability, addressing restlessness, palpitations, and difficulty falling and staying asleep. As a supporting herb, Dan Shen also cools the Blood and reduces swelling from early-stage sores and abscesses.
Flavor and nature
Dan Shen's bitter flavor and cool nature address Blood stasis that presents with Heat. Its bitter flavor drains and breaks up accumulation. Blood stasis can develop alongside Heat, Cold, depending on the underlying pattern, and Dan Shen's bitter, draining, cooling action is suited specifically to the Heat-type presentation, which is why it's considered a primary herb for Blood stasis with Heat.
The same bitter, cool combination explains why Dan Shen also clears Heat to calm the Shen. It's cool temperature settles Heat, while bitter flavor drains. Dan Shen's flavor and nature address restlessness, palpitations, and disturbed sleep that surface when Heat disturbs the Heart.
How Daodi uses it
Dan Shen is one of our favorite herbs. It's used in prescriptions where Blood stagnation shows up alongside pain, restlessness, insomnia, or an agitated mood. Dan Shen is slightly cooling, so if a formula needs to run warmer, we add warming herbs to balance it out.
